GL vs CEM: the real differences and how to prepare for each
The two main 11+ exam boards test in different ways. Here’s how they differ and how your preparation should change.
Most UK 11+ exams are set by one of two boards: GL Assessment or CEM. They assess similar skills but in noticeably different styles, and knowing which one your target school uses should shape how your child practises.
GL Assessment
GL papers are more predictable. Question types are well defined and tend to recur, which means familiarity and accuracy pay off. Verbal and non-verbal reasoning follow recognisable patterns that can be learned and drilled.
CEM
CEM papers are designed to be harder to “teach to”. They lean heavily on vocabulary and on working quickly under time pressure, often mixing topics within a single section. Breadth of reading and pace matter more than memorising question formats.
How to prepare for each
- GL: drill the recurring reasoning patterns until they’re automatic
- CEM: build vocabulary daily and practise switching between topics at speed
- Both: sit full, timed mocks to build exam stamina
Erudira offers dedicated GL and CEM mock modes, so your child practises in the exact format they’ll face on the day.
